No Llegamos Aquí Solos

A new play created in collaboration with community members in East San JoséMade possible by the Creative Work Fund, a program of the Walter and Elise Haas Fund
In 2024 and 2025, over the course of a community story-gathering project, Teatro Visión and Yosimar Reyes created No llegamos aquí solos to share stories rooted in the lives of our East San José neighbors. Blending Yosimar’s deep knowledge of the Mayfair community in which he was raised, his honest and emotive poetic voice, and Teatro Visión’s extensive experience with community-engaged theater practices, the project nurtured community power and inspired civic engagement in East San José.
At the project’s inception, we held 6 poetry workshops with over 60 participants from the following organizations, who represent the heart of East San José. Their stories inspired and shaped the piece you will experience today. Muchísimas gracias to the participants listed below and to all those whose generosity with their stories made this piece possible.

Nora IbaresAbout the Play: It's Mamá Doña's 85th birthday celebration, but her grandson Ignacio has decided that today is the day he is called to organize his community in preparation for an ICE raid. When his neighbors in their apartment complex don't quite gel with Ignacio’s methods, he learns an important lesson about how to care for the community he loves.

This project was made possible by the Creative Work Fund, a program of the Walter and Elise Haas Fund in collaboration with the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The CWF aims to empower collaborations between artists and nonprofit organizations to create new works of art, based on the idea that, “Collaborative efforts among artists, organizations, and their communities can generate a productive exchange and bring the arts to new and intersectional audiences.” No llegamos aquí solos is also supported by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation New and Experimental Works (NEW) Program, a California Arts Council Impact Grant, and the County of Santa Clara.

Collective Poetry Project
with The Cultural Work of Poetry,
a project of the Culture Counts Reading Series at SJSUFor this production of La Muerte Baila, Teatro Visión had the honor of partnering with The Cultural Work of Poetry, a project of the Culture Counts Reading Series at SJSU.
Over the course of the past two months, The Cultural Work of Poetry and Teatro Visión held several workshops with high school students, college students, artists, and community members to reflect on the themes of La Muerte Baila—joy, healing, forgiveness, and remembrance.
Following the workshops, students from Silver Creek High School and San José State University wrote poems expanding on those themes. Members of The Cultural Work of Poetry took responses, poem drafts, and other contributions from the workshops and created collaborative poems, written collectively based on the input of our community.

A recently departed soul named Alejandro has just arrived in Mictlán, the land of the dead, on the eve of el Día de los Muertos. But la Muerte notices that something is different about this soul’s arrival—he can’t remember anything about his past.
Meanwhile, los muertitos—the dead—can’t wait to get back to the land of the living to visit their loved ones. But the portal to the other land is blocked, and they discover that one of them is holding them back!
To cross in time for the holiday, los muertitos have to help Alejandro resolve his unfinished business, and they need your help! Otherwise, they might be stuck until next year…
Full of laughter and song, La Muerte Baila is a heartwarming story about forgiveness, about remembrance, and about choosing how we live our lives.
La Muerte Baila is presented in Spanish with supertitles in English and Spanish.

ASL interpretation will be provided at the Sun., October 19 performance of La Muerte Baila. 
ADA seating is available at the theater, in the main level of the audience chamber and on the balcony. There are elevators to the balcony on the right side of the theater lobby. There are no steps leading into the theater from the Plaza, which is accessible via ramps from the parking lots on both King Rd. and Alum Rock Ave.

Un nuevo muertito llamado Alejandro acaba de llegar al Mictán en la víspera del Día de los Muertos. Pero la Muerte se da cuenta que algo parece diferente de la llegada de este nuevo muertito—no puede recordar nada de su pasado.
Entre tanto, los muertitos no pueden esperar regresar al mundo de los vivos para visitar a sus seres queridos. Pero la puerta al otro lado está cerrada ¡y descubren que uno de ellos los está frenando!
Para cruzar al otro lado a tiempo para las fiestas, los muertitos tienen que ayudar a Alejandro a resolver sus asuntos pendientes ¡y necesitan tu ayuda! De lo contrario, podrían quedarse estancados hasta el próximo año…
Llena de risas y canciones, La Muerte Baila es una conmovedora historia sobre el perdón, el recuerdo y la elección de cómo vivimos nuestras vidas.
