Be the first to hear the new play by Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Yosimar Reyes!
Teatro Visión and Yosimar Reyes are collaborating a community-centered new play development project focusing on East San José and the Mayfair Districts's immigrant communities.
In 2024 and 2025, over the course of a community story-gathering project and subsequent writing and development process, we are working together to create a theater production that shares the stories of East San José residents. Blending Yosimar’s deep knowledge of the Mayfair community in which he was raised, his honest and emotive poetic voice, and Teatro Visión’s extensive experience with community-engaged theater practices, the process and production aim to nurture community power and inspire civic engagement in East San José.
The play explores the struggles of a thriving immigrant community in Silicon Valley, grappling with gentrification and unjust housing conditions. Despite their resilience, the residents lack the language to articulate their plight and face uncertainty as their apartment building undergoes changes under new management. Mama Dona's declining health adds to their worries, prompting questions about legacy and survival in a country that fails to recognize them as citizens.
This new work project is made possible by a Creative Work Fund grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, as well as a grant from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation's New and Experimental Works program.
