Welcome our new Artistic Director - Rodrigo García
We are delighted to introduce our new Artistic Director, Rodrigo García! Many of you know Rodrigo already, as he's been with Teatro Visión for many years as an actor, director, instructor, translator, Artistic Associate, and, most recently, Associate Artistic Director. You may know him best as the director behind our last 3 productions of Macario!
Learn more about Rodrigo on our Staff page
Rodrigo is taking over the Artistic Director position from our Founding Artistic Director Elisa Marina Alvarado, who has been the artistic leader of Teatro Visión since its founding in 1984. Elisa continues to work with us as a member of the artistic team developing our new play, scheduled to premiere in October 2018.
Here is what Rodrigo has to say:
I feel very humbled and honored to be walking in the steps of Elisa Marina Alvarado, to continue the work she started and nurtured during the past 33 years. I am looking forward to helping carry the artistic vision of this company rooted in our values of social justice, informed by our experiences as Chicanx/Latinx.

Teatro welcomes new board member: Sylvia Kennedy
Teatro Visión is excited to introduce another new member of our Board of Directors: Sylvia Kennedy.
Sylvia grew up in North East San José. Since graduating from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1994, Sylvia has devoted her legal career to the practice of public interest law. At La Raza Centro Legal, she supervised an elder law project in San Francisco’s Mission District. With the Office of the Santa Clara County Counsel, she helped establish the Financial Abuse Specialist Team (FAST), a program devoted to helping elderly victims of fraud, and worked on various state-wide projects including efforts to update public health laws. For several years Sylvia and her husband ran a consumer law practice handling class actions on behalf of California consumers. She is currently a Senior Staff Attorney with Senior Adults Legal Assistance, where she handles a variety of matters including elder abuse cases.
Being an active volunteer in her community is important to Sylvia. She has volunteered with Roberta Jones Junior Theatre, served on the board of the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley, served on the Scholarship Committee and the Judiciary Committee of La Raza Lawyer’s Association, and chaired the Advisory Board of The Katharine and George Alexander Community Law Center, a law center Sylvia helped establish when she was a law student. A mother of four kids, Sylvia leads a Girl Scout Troop and serves as a Cultural Liaison for Girl Scouts of Northern California.

A New Era for Teatro
As we approach the end of the year, we’re pleased to announce a new member of our staff, though she’s no stranger to the Teatro família. Earlier this week, longtime production designer and artistic collaborator Leigh Henderson accepted an offer to serve as our interim Managing Director. Leigh will take over for Peter Allen, who is stepping down to pursue a run for public office.
In addition to her amazing design and scenic work on numerous Teatro productions for more than a decade – including the past three years on MACARIO – Leigh has worked as a financial, managerial, and fund development consultant. She has previously served as Managing Director and Director of Operations for San José-based Mexican Heritage Corporation as well as Production and Company Manager for the Rocky Mountain Theater Company in Colorado. She is currently an adjunct professor of theater arts at San José City College.

Tuesday for Teatro
By providing opportunities for Latino/Chicano youth to experience live theater, participate in interactive programs, and learn about critical social justice issues, Teatro Visión presents a vital avenue to community engagement and empowerment.
As we approach the holiday season, we look forward to continuing our teatro classes in the new year. But we need your help to take our youth programming to the next level and give our young teatristas more opportunities to shine on stage!
Tomorrow, we'll be taking part in Giving Tuesday — which is like the polar opposite of Black Friday. For 24 hours, people across the country will celebrate the spirit of the holidays by giving back to their favorite nonprofit organizations.
As an added bonus, HIPGive will be matching the first $20,000 in donations received by Teatro and other partnering organizations. Please take advantage of this exciting opportunity to double your impact on youth in our community!
Thank you in advance for your continued support. Once you make a donation, don't forget to share the news on Twitter using the hashtag #TuesdayForTeatro.
UPDATE
Thanks to some late-night generosity, we blew past our #GivingTuesday goal and raised more than $2,300 for our youth programs! We're humbled by this inspiring show of support, especially on such short notice. ¡Saludos a todos por su apoyo!
