Silvia González S.
Biography

Silvia González S. is the author of “Boxcar” and an award-winning Latina playwright whose works have been produced all over the United States including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Arizona and Oregon.
González started writing “Boxcar” in 1987 after hearing about 18 immigrants who were found dead in a boxcar train on the U.S./Mexican border in Texas. Her efforts started after seeing an insensitive TV news report, which covered the deadly incident in the same monotonous tone as the daily weather report that followed it.  Between other projects, González spent the next 16 years researching other similar incidents and interviewing people who had risked their lives crossing the U.S./Mexican border in pursuit of the American dream.  “Boxcar” is the culmination of González’ own journey to create a play that accurately portrays the true story on which it is based.
Prior to writing plays, González did stand-up comedy in Chicago where she thought she might some day become the next Hispanic Joan Rivers. She later moved to Yuma, Arizona where she was introduced to community theater. For González, writing has become an outlet for addressing real-life issues. One day, she may try to take her works to the big screen.
González was born and raised in Pacoima, California and after studying at Loyola Marymount University and in Rome, Italy she received her Bachelor’s Degree in education from Loyal University in Chicago.
